Hand Painted Hollycock English Bone China Cup And Saucer

From the sold archives of Antiques And Teacups
I just love hand painted cup and saucer designs. The period in England in the 1930-1940s was a terrific time for hand painted designs. The cup and saucer I have used today is a lovely hollyhock design with a road and fence on the saucer as well. Cups and saucers were an important part of everyday social life and how you served your guests or family at tea time sometimes even set your social status.

Hand painted china designs were very popular in the 1930-1940s era because of the prevailing move away from formalism and embrace of more freedom in design. So hand painted china was an expression of the freedom echoed in dress and social interactions.

I love this design and LOVE to take tea. I am thrilled at the resurgence of courses being offered in tea ettiquette, and tea parties being revived as a relaxed way to spend time with friends.

Carry on...and pas the scones please!
