Tuesday Cuppa Tea, Auld Lang Syne, Twelfth Night

Hello and welcome to the first Tuesday Cuppa of 2016! Time flies when you are having fun!!!

I have this old cup...no saucer,  just a cup and I have shared it before...but I LOVE it!!!...with the verse O'Auld Lang Syne on it.

The cup is in the Romantic Staffordshire style, and I haven't researched the blue transferware pattern yet.

The cup was made by Wedgwood, England between 1891 and 1900 according to the mark.  The verse comes from a poem by Robert Burns who wrote it in 1788. It has become such a staple of New Year celebrations all over the English speaking world, and has been translated into thousands of languages.

This photo, from Pinterest, is a teaset in the pattern....would love to have that!

It's January, so I looked into the Country Diary Of An Edwardian Lady by Edith Holden, a favorite book at any time of year, and a favorite way to begin a month...

Mottoes:

"Janiveer freeze the pot upon the fire"

"If the grass do grow in Janiveer, It grows the worse for it all the year."

"A wet January, a wet spring"

"The blackest month of all the year, is the month of Janiveer"

Blue Tits and Great Tits

Dead leaves of Elm, Oak, Beech Chestnut and Sycamore

And a reminder that this is Epiphany, or Twelfth Night. One term, Epiphany, refers to January 5th or 6th...depending on tradition or calendar...being the night the 3 Wisemen reached the baby Jesus...

It is also the end of ....

Which we all know and love, and can probably sing until we forget something and fall into giggles...

At the Oak Bay Beach Hotel just outside of Victoria, BC Canada where we spent Christmas...you can see my post about that HERE,  one of the parts of our Christmas package was a dinner show in the attached Davis Foster Foundation Theater...

called A Crooner's Christmas...

this is their publicity photo....anyway, as part of that, there was an audience participation with the song of The 12 Days Of Christmas...with each of the 12 tables of 8 in the theater each being responsible for singing their appropriate response during the song...our table was the 4 Calling Birds. The song was led by Tom Watson...a comedian, dressed in...I kid you not...just wish I'd brought me camera...a bright red lounge suit with a pattern of white snowmen and metallic gold presents all over with matching tie. Anyway, it was hilarious. We all laughed until we cried!

This is the Victoria British Columbia Provincial Parliament building with it's Christmas lights. It has white lights all year round, but the red and green are season additions.

I would also like to share a couple of the tea related gifts I received for Christmas....first...another Emma Bridgewater Robin mug. You know I love both Emma and English Robins, and this is a mix of the Happy Christmas Robin in a wreath in a snowstorm from a couple of years ago, with the Birds line Robin mug. Emma is calling this Robin In A Snowstorm, and of course I LOVE it! They know me so well!

Then there was an English bone china teapot from a newer pottery, Springfield in a holly design and sort of kettle shape...love it!

Another great prezzie, a steeping double walled glass with removable stainless steel infuser, glass steeping lid and a silicone band for holding. It's made by trYeh. I've been using it for my loose tea, and like it.

Thanks for joining me for Tuesday Cuppa Tea!  I hope you had a lovely New Year and am looking forward to 2016. Now...I am going to go get dinner so we will be ready to watch....

Have a wonderful week!  Below is the list of some of the blog parties I will be part of and there is the linky for your tea related posts...please remember that it is SSSLLLOOOOOOWWWW but if you are patient...it's there! And I love to read your comments, and can find you to visit!

  1. Happy New Year! Sounds like you had a lovely Christmas in Victoria. I would absolutely love to go back there. The Parliament Building is stunning with all of the lights. You received some wonderful tea related gifts. I like the shape of your new teapot. Happy to know there are "newer" potteries producing teaware in England. One more hour until Downton!

  6. Happy New Year, Eve! I really wished that I lived closer to Victoria, BC. Sadly, it's cheaper to fly across the pond to the U.S. than across my own country! Loved the teawares that you were gifted for Christmas. I saw on FB that Emma Bridgewater had a Boxing Week sale, but the international shipping fees were too high for me. Thank you for hosting and enjoy the first week of January!

  13. Yes, 12th Night. Which means I no longer have a real excuse to keep the Christmas decorations up. Except I will keep one of the trees with just the lights on for another week or so. Michigan in January is so dark and cloudy, the lights will be cheering. You got some very nice tea things; I got two teacups myself. Our loved ones know us well! Happy New Year Ruth!

  14. Ruth, I hope you get your heating problem solved. I'm in a tip with a bedroom re-do and so can't do quite as much with my blog this week. Happy Hot Tea Month!
